Wolfburn Batch 128: First Wolfburn from peated malt

Fast maturation in small casks

Wolfburn Batch 128 is the first single malt whisky launched by the young Scottish distillery that was produced from peated malt. Actually the Wofburn Morven was supposed to win the title of the first peated Wolfburn: Some months ago first clues to this anticipated release came up in the internet. But before this new product line that will join the smoky Wolfburn Northland and the not-smoky Wolfburn Aurora is released now this limited small bacth edition was launched.

Lightly peated malt was basic of the Wolfburn Batch No. 128

While the Northland gets its smoky character by the maturation of unpeated new make in ex-Islay quarter casks the Wolfburn Batch No. 128 is based on lightly peated malt. The phenolic content of the malt was about 10 ppm so the single malt is not very peaty but characterized by a comfortable smoky basis. In 2014 the new make was filled into small fresh Bourbon casks. The small volume of these 100 litres casks made the single malt mature very fast so that the Thurso team decided not to use it later for the Morven release but create a small batch bottling with those casks now. The Wolfburn Batch 128 is named after the place the casks had been stored: warehouse No. 1, stow No. 28. It was bottled with an alcoholic content of 46 % ABV.

Available now in limited numbers

The Wolfburn Batch No.1 is a small batch release and limited to 6.000 bottles. The tasting notes that are published on the Wolfburn homepage speak about toffee, honey and vanilla notes, enriched with citrus aroma and a warm peat smoke.
