A third whisky for the current Puni portfolio

Attentive fans of the Italien Puni whisky probably have already noticed that a special edition of this label has been released: Matured in ex-Pinot Noir casks from South Tyrol/Italy this malt is quite different from the both other releases of the distillery, the Puni Nova and the Puni Alba.

Puni Nero named after the Pinot Noir Casks it was matured in

There are only 3.000 bottles of this limited Puni Nero that was bottled at the age of 3 years with an alcoholic content of 43% ABV. The whisky was matured only in Pinot Noir casks and therefor got a fruity aroma of plums, wild berries and orange zests. The wine Pinot Noir is also known as Pino Nero and that is the reason for the name of the release: Puni Nero. The wine is grown here in the area of South Tyrol where the Puni Distillery is situated. So the Malt Puni Nero was really influenced by the local terroir.

Two of a kind but different

The two standard releases of Puni Distillery represent two different aromatic styles. Puni Nova was matured in ex-Bourbon casks and got a finish in Marsala casks. The aromas that characterize it are vanilla, honey and banana. Puni Alba spent its main maturation time in Marsala casks and was finished in ex-Islay casks so that it got stronger and darker fruity and spicy aromas that are joined by smoky notes. In the moment all Puni whiskies are bottled at the age of three years.

Modern distillery

The Puni Distillery in Glurns in the Vinschgau only produces since 2012 in is situated in a very modern and architecturally very special building (we reported about the release of the first whisky here in this article). During the last years Puni was granted many different awards, starting with prices for the architecture, the World Whisky Award 2016 for the best bottle design until many medals and awards for the whisky itself. In the center of the distillery there are two pot stills from Scotland. The modern visitor center welcomes lots of interested people every year.
