The Highland Distillery strengthens its presence in global travel retail market with two exclusive new bottlings with age statement

Bacardi-owned whisky distillery, Aberfeldy, is launching a 16 year old and a 21 year old single malt with Madeira cask finish into global travel retail in September. The Gebr. Heinemann stores worldwide were selected as sales partners.

Bual and Malvasia grapes

The two new expressions have both been finished for up to 12 months in ex-Bual casks and ex-Malvasia Malmsey casks. While the dark Madeira wines from the white, aromatic bual grape are rather semi-sweet, the white grape variety malvasia (engl. malmsey) produces very sweet and probably the most famous Madeira wines. The additional maturing period in this combination of casks should create the perfect balance between the honeyed richness of Aberfeldy and the sweet notes of Madeira wines, and give the single malts classic Madeira notes of caramel, peaches, orange peel and burnt sugar. Malt master Stephanie Macleod said: "Aberfeldy has those similar sweet, rich notes that Madeira wine is famously known for. By using Madeira casks, I can further develop the layers of flavour present in Aberfeldy’s honeyed-rich characters, resulting in a whisky with extra spiciness."

Both new expressions are bottled of 40% abv and complement Aberfeldy’s exclusive single malt portfolio at global retail. They will be available worldwide in the travel value shops at airports at a price of about $110 for the 16 year old (1 litre) and about $195 for the 21-year-old Madeira cask finish (0.7 litre).
