Limited editions of Glencadam with finish in PX and Madeira casks
Lush and fruity flavours from an often underestimated distillery
With the Glencadam 17 y.o. Reserva PX and the Glencadam 15 y.o. Reserva de Madeira, two limited special editions from the Highland distillery have recently been launched.
Founded in 1825, the Glencadam Distillery has been part of the Angus Dundee Distillers portfolio since 2003 and is still under the radar of many whisky fans. This is probably not least due to the fact that a range of original single malt bottlings from Glencadam has only been available for a few years. However, this range is impressive in terms of both its variety and quality. All of the distillery's age-statement whiskies are bottled at 46% ABV. in natural colour and without chill-filtering. This also applies to the two new editions:
Glencadam 17 y.o. Reserva PX
Distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2023, this Highland Single Malt Whisky was matured in American Oak Bourbon Casks and received a distinctive finish in Pedro Ximénez Sherry Quarter Casks. A total of 4,188 bottles are available.
Tasting notes
Nose: Lush aromas of sticky toffee pudding, black cherries, salted caramel and maple syrup, intermingled with dark berry fruits and cocoa powder.
Palate: Luscious layers of Black Forest gateau, liquorice with blackcurrants, cappuccino and crème caramel, paired with dates, plums and sweet spices.
Finish: Chocolate and cherry liqueur, tart with almond cream (frangipane) and sultanas fade into espresso and cosy cake spices.
Glencadam 15 y.o. Reserva de Madeira
This whisky was distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2023. The 15 years in between it also spent initially in American oak bourbon casks and then finally in Madeira wine casks. The liqueur wine casks from the Portuguese island rounded off the Glencadam to create a delicious single malt. A total of 5,826 bottles are available.
Tasting notes
Nose: Inviting aromas of caramel and ginger biscuits mixed with caramelised pecans, dried pineapple and baking spices.
Palate: Mouth-filling layers of peach cake, syrup and caramel cream, married with toasted walnuts, pralines and candied fruit peel.
Finish: Impressions of brandy butter, honey cake and salted caramel, leaving a hint of dark chocolate and cinnamon.
About Glencadam Distillery
Glencadam is located in the village of Brechin and unfortunately does not yet offer tours. However, according to information on the distillery's website, this is set to change soon. Interested visitors will then have the opportunity to admire the stills with Glencadam's special lyne arms: they rise at a 15-degree angle, which ensures a lot of reflux and gives the new make a very soft and extremely fruity character.
