And so, on 14 November 2023, the 75th birthday of King Charles III, cask no. 1838 from the neighbouring Royal Lochnagar Distillery was bottled. A 45-year-old Royal Lochnagar - if that's not a royal dram!

The whisky for this The King's Birthday Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky was distilled on 7 November 1978 and the 253 bottles were bottled by hand after Charles III had personally tasted the whisky. The 45-year-old single malt has 52.1% vol. to offer.

Royal connection between Balmoral and Royal Lochnagar

Ewan Andrew, President of Global Supply Chain & Procurement at Diageo and Grantee of the Royal Warrant held by Royal Lochnagar, said: “The association between Balmoral and Royal Lochnagar Distillery dates back to the first Royal visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848. Everyone at Royal Lochnagar today is proud to supply our Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky to Balmoral, and also to have welcomed His Majesty, as The Duke of Rothesay, to the distillery on several occasions. It was an honour to select one of our rarest casks for The King’s Birthday Edition and fitting that it will generate a natural legacy in the area through the tree planting it will support on the Balmoral Estate.”

Producer's tasting notes for the Balmoral The King's Birthday Edition 45 year old

An elegant whisky in true Highland style, matured in European oak: on the nose, a delicate interplay of fresh berries, redcurrants and citrus zest; the rich and creamy palate unfolds to reveal exquisite Royal Lochnagar signature fruit notes, candied walnuts and toffee undertones, followed by ripe berries, citrus and oak spice on the lingering finish.

Only available direct from Balmoral

The Balmoral The King's Birthday Edition is only available locally from the Balmoral Gift Shop and its online shop for £3,200. However, shipping is only offered within the United Kingdom. Three of the exclusive bottles are destined to raise money for charity, while bottle number 75 will go into the Royal Lochnagar archives.
