Highland Park has released Valknut

With its second expression in the Viking Legend series, the distillery dives once more into Orkney’s Norse past

After the first edition last year - Highland Park Valkyrie - for whose product design the Dane Jim Lyngvild was responsible, the Orkney distillery now presents the second edition of its Viking Legend series: Highland Park Valknut. For the second edition, the designer and expert of Nordic mythology Lyngvild again worked closely with Master Blender Gordon Motion and was inspired by the mythological Valknut symbol. The ancient and mysterious Valknut symbol of three interlinked triangles, which can be clearly seen on the packaging, was used in Nordic mythology to represent honourable warriors killed in battle.

Smoky and spicy character

This single malt, which uses a small amount of Orkney-grown Tartan barley, has a slightly higher phenolic level compared to Highland Park Valkyrie. Predominantly matured in American Sherry-seasoned oak casks, Highland Park Valknut was bottled at 46.8% abv. The aroma includes toasted vanilla pods, cracked black pepper, oak shavings, cloves, aniseed and aromatic smoke. On the palate there are notes of sweet, aromatic cloves combined with spicy aniseed, followed by an intensely balanced and powerful finish.

Highland Park Valknut will be launched in more than 15 markets worldwide. The third and final expression of the Viking Legend series will be Highland Park Valfather, which is scheduled for release in 2019.
