It's all about reduction of CO2 emissions and the whisky distilleries cannot ignore the necessity to take actions. As one of many measures, Bruichladdich redesigned the bottle of The Classic Laddie, the leading player of the distillery's core range.

While customers already had the option to opt-out an additional secondary packaging when buying their The Classic Laddie, the tin will no longer be used in future. Its production causes 1 kg of CO2, Bruichladdich informs.

The bottles will retain the familiar aqua colour, but in future they will have an organic colour coating and a closure made of bio-based polypropylene.

The new bottles are made of 60% recycled glass and are 32% lighter than the previous ones, which is also noticeable regarding transport. The redesign of The Classic Laddie bottle reduces the amount of CO2 emissions generated by packaging by 65%, Bruichladdich informs.

“As an industry, we’ve become accustomed to believing that single malt Scotch whisky must come with outer packaging as standard. Where most other spirits travel around the world in just the bottle, the majority of single malts have an elaborate or heavy secondary, outer pack. And it made us ask ourselves, why? Secondary packaging is not always necessary, and it’s certainly not sustainable.
The new proprietary Classic Laddie bottle marks a significant step change for Bruichladdich. This is much more than a bottle redesign. It is changing the trajectory for the brand and the way that we operate as a values-led business," says Douglas Taylor, CEO of Bruichladdich.
