Nosing:
Peat upfront with a definite marine character. Unlit charcoal
Taste:
Sweet arrival, oily texture. Flavour intensity builds over time. Lots of the typical peat smoke, but there's some fruit struggling to make itself known. Sweet overall but there's a slightly acrid bitterness towards the end with a note of antiseptic.
Finish:
Long peaty and noticable oakiness. Relatively sweet throughout.
Comment:
This is an intense one. The flavours are powerful and the strength is well judged. I expected the sherry casks to have more influence on the character of Lagavulin than I think they did in the end. There's certainly no identifiable sherry flavour as the peat level seems quite high here - though the fruitiness it lends is a definite change. Its an expensive bottle, but its a good experience so I can't really fault it on that. Its certainly one for the peat heads. For my tastes, the peat level is slightly too high overall.
