Glenmorangie Astar
This is the evolved remake of the Glenmorangie Artisan Cask. The Astar surprises with vanilla, oak and sweet malt. With its hefty 57.1% Vol., It has enough reserves to dilute with some still water.

Whereas the "Artisan" was a prime example of delicate oak management, the "Astar" tries to do too many things at once:
1.) Showcase the distillery character,
2.) Do so in a cask-strength version and
3.) show unique oak contributions.
Unfortunately, this results in an unnecessarily pungent, spirit-driven dram that will not settle down, no matter how much water you add.
Very little oak is apparent on the nose, and the palate contribution reminds of a buttery Chardonnay layered with sawdust at best.
Gone are the days of the delicate, richly textured "Artisan Cask" which was trying to prove how fresh oak could make a delicate contribution. Many distilleries have taken up the concept, but few do it well.
How unfortunate that even the original archetype fell victim to "progress".
