Fettercairn 16 Years - 2nd Release
This Fettercairn is the second bottling of the 16 year old. But apart from its age and alcohol strength the 2nd release has nothing in common with the first one: After its maturation in Ex-Bourbon, the Malt was finished in first-fill and refilled Oloroso and Palo Cortado Sherry casks. Palo Cortado is a type of Sherry, that is created when Sherry unintendedly develops into Olorosos during cultivation. It is considered a rare delicacy. Even the design of the bottle is special: The ring around the bottleneck and the engraving on the shoulder of the bottle are showing the speciality of the distillation with the outer cooling. Even today the company carries the unique logo of the white unicorn.

Lured by its craft presentation, this Fettercairn was an imprudent impulse buy which I started to regret when I checked reviews afterwards. Whiffs of pinewood, pears and mango emerge from the glass, followed by mushrooms, hay and olive oil. Unusual, subtle and inviting. On the palate, citrus fruits, black pepper and a touch of stout are pushed to the side by walnuts, melon and distant honey. Rosemary, lemon zest and pronounced sherry notes characterize the long and solid finish. Lesson learned, right to an opinion does not make the opinion right.
