The malt profile is delicate and hides far behind the voluptuous qualities contributed by the Sauternes casks. Purist may claim the wine barrel overpowered this Whisky, but it is a perfect symbiosis for my taste.
All hallmark Sauternes aromas are present, centering around the "noble rot" component, which may also pass as "heather" for those inexperienced with botrytized wines. The honeyed richness of dried apricots and bitter orange jam is an unapologetic portrayal of one of the greatest wines in the world.
The palate is rich and mellow, with a big, sugary sweetness at the tip of the tongue. It then becomes much more delicate and lean, perfectly balanced by its 46% ABV. The slightest of tannins and wine acidity make it finish drier than it started, supporting a long, sweet-wine driven, almost floral finish of orange blossom, heather and honey.
A bargain at release and a quintessential cigar malt.
