30. Aug 2018
Nosing:
Light and fresh. Apples and pears, some sweet spiciness like nutmeg or cinnamon. Background vanilla, some light citrus too. You can smell the sherry cask influence without it being overly obvious.
Taste:
Balanced, slightly sweet arrival. Flavours intensify over time. Fresh fruitiness and caramel. Oak spiciness with a touch of black pepper develops.
Finish:
Short to medium, still fruity, some oat spiciness remains.
Comment:
I got this as a free sample from my usual specialist supplier, so I didn't know what to expect. For a 10 year old this is a very well balanced whisky. The nose and palate are really very good. The finish is a little short for my tastes but overall it is a very good release. The price on this is great, and it's a shame it doesn't show up in the big supermarkets as it puts a lot of the other similarly priced standard releases to shame. This is what I would probably put into the category of good 'beginners malts' - which isn't a derogatory description as far as I'm concerned. It's just one of those bottles that is very approachable and easy drinking. Good stuff.
