Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength

105 proof was the old measure of alcohol content. The Whisky was mixed with gunpowder. Based on the explosive strength of the mixture, it was possible to calculate the alcohol content. The then named Glenfarclas 105 matured exclusively in Sherry casks and was bottled with a strong 60% vol.

It's a common misconception that cask strength equals good quality - this NAS Glenfarclas, however, is young, immature and quite aggressive. On the nose, there is subdued fruity sweetness, strawberry jam, candy apple and alcohol. With water, the fruitiness intensifies with apples, pears and hints of burned toffee and wine vinegar. The taste is peppery, cask-dominated and slightly metallic. Fading quickly, the simple and bittersweet finish confirms that 60% ABV alone are not enough to hide the shortcomings of this affordable but rather disappointing Single Malt.
