Viewer's Comments about Balblair

Founded by John Ross of the Clan Ross in 1790, Balblair is one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland and undoubtedly one of the most attractive small distilleries still remaining today. The Distillery currently offers a considerable selection of award winning Single Highland malts, all unique in their distinct character, taste and aroma.

John Ross ran the Distillery as a thriving business until in 1817 when he was sequestrated. However, this did not stop him and in 1824, he was joined by his son Andrew in the family business. The distillery stayed in the Ross family until in 1894 when the tenancy was taken over by Alexander Cowan. In 1948, the freehold was bought by Mr. Robert Cumming who promptly expanded the distillery and increased production. Mr. Cumming ran the distillery until 1970 when he sold it to what became Allied Distillers and for the first time in its history, Balblair was not owned by local businessmen. In 1996, Balblair was purchased Inver House Distillers.

Today the Ross legacy of the area lives on as four out of the seven current employees share the surname Ross.

The award winning Balblair Highland Single Malt is of the highest quality, shown consistently through numerous medal accolades that the Balblair range of ages collects at worldwide competitions, all of which are blind tasted.

Proudly boasting that it has "a spirit of the air", not an obscure reference to the angel's share or even to some implied fleeting quality of the actual spirit, but to a report from Aberdeen University that rated the air in Edderton the purest in Scotland. Although a substantial statement, the surroundings are indeed tranquil, the air is invigorating as it blows over the Dornoch Firth, combined with the effect of the light from the seas proximity, there could hardly be a more agreeable setting.

One of the most aromatic of all malt whiskies, Balblair is light and fresh with a hint of autumn mist. Sweet to start, it has an appetising citrus tinge, followed closely by a slightly peaty note as it slides gently over the back of the tongue. An intriguingly complex and satisfying whisky.

Ardmore won the gold medal “Best in Class” distinction at the 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition where they described Ardmore in the below tasting notes:

One wonders what perfectly peated is? This must be close to it. Peat leads the way on the nose followed by heather, sweet tobacco, chocolate, orange and spice with gentle notes of peat all the way along with wonderful malty tones. Subtle but complex in the mouth with lively flow and loads of emerging flavours. With time in the glass oats, honey and heather begin to show. Gentle oak cradle. Long, sublimely smooth finish. Gorgeous dram.

The Balblair Distillery

Founded by John Ross of the Clan Ross in 1790, Balblair is the second oldest working distillery in Scotland. It is situated on the Dornoch firth, one of the most stunning scenic areas of Scotland. The area is known as the 'parish of the peats' whilst the name Balblair means battlefield or town of the plain.

The distillery itself is a two pot still capable of producing approximately 1.4 million litres of whisky a year. The water
is drawn from the Ault Dearg burn which originates in the Struie hill.
